I love you Peter Pan - Rebecca Ethington

So, when I was 9 I was in love with Peter Pan. Yep, the fictional character. My paper back copy was falling to bits, I had watched the video of the musical so many times the tape had worn through. Loved the story loved the idea, loved the imagination involved.

But I wasn’t like most girls who would place themselves in Wendy or Tigerlily’s shows and go on their merry way – oh no – I created a whole other story in which Hook kidnapped children and I was one of them (this was post ‘Hook’ so my lack of originality wasn’t too surprising for a nine year old). It was a huge romantic epic with danger and death and I even had the movie trailer planned out in my head.

I would re-enact scenes in front of my grandparents bathroom mirror, make the neighborhood kids play different roles while we ran through the orchard in my backyard. Yep, I was amazing.

And my over active imagination took me to great heights.

When I first started my own touring theater company ‘Peter Pan’ was the first show I wrote, the first one to put on stage.

It wasn’t very exciting, and without a fly system it mostly involved a lot of jumping. But it was still fun to do. This was around the time the 2003 live version came out, and we all went to see it together – because that is what theater people do.

I will always remember our ‘Wendy’ and ‘Tigerlilly’ gushing over how gorgeous Jeremy Sumpter is. And all I could think was that every girl must have a crush on Peter Pan – I mean how could you not.

He flies AND he hasĀ  sword.
